Guidance notes for use of mp3 Self-hypnosis session


As you will be purchasing an mp3 download with no text instructions, you may find it helpful to print the guidance notes below and read them before listening to your self-hypnosis session.

Lie on a sofa, bed, or sit in a comfortable chair with good head support, preferably in a darkened room. Use the recording daily for the first week, thereafter, whenever you want to re-affirm the affect. You may feel you have been asleep at certain times, but if you awaken at the end of the session, be assured, you haven’t. But If you do fall asleep and miss the ending, listen to the recording next time when you are less tired, in a well lit room, in a more upright position.

Often changes can be quite sudden and dramatic, but don’t be too disappointed if an immediate improvement isn’t noticeable; the issue that you are trying to resolve may have been around for a long time, and it may take days/weeks for you to be aware of any significant change; only when you look back will you see how much change has actually taken place.

Getting depression is not a sign of weakness. There are no particular 'personality types' that are more at risk than others. However, some risk factors have been identified; these include inherited (genetic) factors, such as having parents or grandparents who have suffered from depression and non-genetic factors such as the death of a parent when you were young or suffering a trauma of some kind..

It is often impossible to identify a 'cause' in many people, and this can be distressing for people who want to understand the reasons why they are ill. However depression, like any illness, can strike for no apparent reason. How is depression diagnosed?

Unfortunately there is no brain scan or blood test that can be used to diagnose when a person has a depressive illness. The diagnosis can only be made from the symptoms. Generally speaking a diagnosis of depression will be made if a person has a persistently low mood that significantly influences their everyday life and has been present for two weeks or more, and there are also three/four or more other symptoms of depression.

In addition to feeling low most or all of the time, many other symptoms can occur in depressive illness (though not everybody has all of them).


These are some symptoms you may be familiar with:


Lack of motivation.

Being irritable.

Losing interest in sex.

Avoiding other people.

Losing self-confidence.

Feeling restless, tense and anxious.

Finding it harder than usual to make decisions.

Feeling tired all of the time and having no energy.

Finding it difficult to concentrate and think straight.

Feeling useless and inadequate.

Feeling hopeless - that nothing will make things better.

Losing interest in normal activities, work, hobbies and everyday life.

Being unable to gain pleasure from activities that normally would be pleasurable.

Difficulty sleeping or waking early in the morning (though some feel that they can't get out of bed and 'face the world').

Having a poor appetite, no interest in food and losing weight (though some people overeat and put on weight - 'comfort eating').

What causes it?

The cause of BDD is unclear, but it may be genetic or caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.

What are the symptoms?

People with BDD are excessively worried about a part of their body which they perceive to have a defect. They continue to believe this despite reassurances about their appearance.

Any area of the body may be involved in BDD, but the face is the most common.

A person with BDD may:

Wear excessive make-up or heavy clothing to hide their perceived defect

Repeatedly look in the mirror and seek reassurance about their appearance

Frequently touch or measure the perceived defect

Repeatedly pick at their skin or pluck their hair and eyebrows

Feel anxious when around other people

Seek medical treatment for the perceived defect

Diet and exercise excessively
People with BDD may not be able to hold down a job and sometimes avoid socialising. They can also find it difficult to have relationships.

Who's affected?

BDD is believed to affect at least one per cent of the UK population. It's more common in people with a history of depression and/or social phobia.

It usually starts in adolescence when people are most sensitive about their appearance.

It's difficult to prevent BDD from developing since its cause remains unclear.
